07-24-10. I'm lazy & exhausted. I just drew the table.

x is for xylophone: Jellio

This is really design, not exactly art, but I'm in a hurry tonight and all the paintings sucked again. This is kind of cool. Apparently the table can actually be played.

u is for ukulele: Russell West

Painting by Russell West
It's a bit of a stretch, but West is connected to ukuleles via a musician named Billy Jenkins. Jenkins worked with a ukulele player before, and Jenkins' music helped to inspire this and other paintings by West. Anyway... I'll just admit it, I was in a bit of a hurry today.

07-21-10. American lotus (Nelumbo lutea) from Sheldon Marsh in Ohio (near Lake Erie).

I was unaware that the US has a native lotus species. I thought they were all Asian in origin (perhaps because of the association with Buddhism). I'll seek out this plant...

r is for rain: Charline von Heyl

"Defenster 2", 2004. By Charline von Heyl
"The exhibition also offers a few representatives of past trends made current. One example is the German-born New York painter Charline von Heyl, the show's token abstract expressionist. Von Heyl is gritty; her fire can be recognized immediately in her paintings. Defenster 2 (2004) unleashes a fluid tempest in rust-colored paint, an unpleasant hue that signals decay, as though the canvas had been left out in the rain. Hidden among the sweeping painted lines is a pair of pale peach-toned human legs. Barely visible, this remnant of a painted figure makes the work seem fresh. This hidden element, a mysterious shadow, implicates von Heyl as a painter grappling with the desire to paint the representational and finally being overcome by the nihilistic and violent impulse of abstraction." - from "A New Lease on Painting" by Nicole Davis,

07-18-10. Tour de France fairy cakes (British for cupcakes).
