11-12-11. Hibiscus 31.
This concludes the series of hibiscus sketches. The next step will be to make a book of the 31 drawings. I'll keep everyone updated while I work on getting this done. If everything works as planned, a copy of the book will be available to purchase through Etsy.

Frangipani (Bauhaus) [SOLD]
"Frangipani (Bauhaus)", oil on canvas, 16x20". For sale on Etsy. |
The frangipani blossoms are based on part of an image found on Yahoo. A structural formula overlays the blossoms. This structural formula is for a compound isolated from the bark of Plumeria bicolor, a species of frangipani. I found the structural formula within a patent for an iridoid-saccharide compound, filed in 2004. I found the patent by doing a Google Patents search for "frangipani". There are possibly some medical uses for the chemical compound.
I loosely followed a "Bauhaus" style, with a limited palette based mostly on primary colors, and strong geometric forms. The result is slightly Cubist. I reviewed the history of the Bauhaus while working on the painting. Their style seemed appropriate for my piece, fusing science with art, which is similar to what the Bauhaus was trying to achieve.
