05-27-10. Copy of Aubrey Beardsley illustration, "Bathyllus' Swan Dance".

This character is male. Beardsley deliberately gave him a feminine appearance. Beardsley died of tuberculosis when he was 25. To me, that explains some of the qualities of his work. Sometimes his illustrations remind me of the naughty but elaborately detailed and stylized drawings that some of my classmates drew in high school and college. He was very, very good at what he did, though.

Painting # 008. Peonies at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

I took a photo of these peonies just before the Bloggers Anonymous event at the IMA last week. This cultivar is named Eden's Perfume. They had a lovely, sweet scent of floral perfume.

The peony is the state flower of Indiana.

"The peony (Paeonia) was adopted as the state flower by the 1957 General Assembly (Indiana Code 1-2-7). From 1931 to 1957 the zinnia was the state flower. The peony blooms the last of May and early June in various shades of red and pink and also in white; it occurs in single and double forms. No particular variety or color was designated by the General Assembly. It is cultivated widely throughout the state and is extremely popular for decorating gravesites for Memorial Day. "

05-18-10. Majolica Miffy (Nijntje). To my surprise, Miffy is Dutch, not Japanese.

She predates Hello Kitty by many years. By the way, does anyone know how to say "Nijntje"? (I'm guessing something like nyint-yeh.)

Not one to give to a loved one. It sends the message "Leave me alone" in flower language.

05-15-10. Great egret (Ardea alba). Spotted a couple of days ago at pond in Carmel, IN, US.

This is also at Target, and it's the exact opposite of what I just posted a moment ago.

Absolutely hideous and wrong. I wonder if Potato Head collectors draw a line somewhere. This Iron Man piece of crap is butt effing ugly.

Beautiful, well-designed B. toys at Target.

These are in their "Specialty" section. They have people who would buy these pegged. I *love* the non-primary color schemes and all the browns, unlike most hideous regular toys.

Hummel Park in Plainfield has this little stream under a bridge. All the rocks look like they were added artificially, but they're fun to mess with, and there are almost always a few people hanging out down there. This is where I skipped a stone for the first time.

05-11-10. Saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). Source of saffron spice and dye.

05-10-10. 88 butterfly (Diaethria clymena).

From Veracruz (long east coast state in Mexico bordering the Gulf of Mexico).

05-09-10. Joseph's coat (Amaranthus tricolor). An ornamental and edible amaranth that's leafy instead of seedy.

We gave Phalaenopsis orchid plants to each of our mothers for Mother's Day.

05-08-10. When I looked up things about the color cerulean, I found out what Dendroica is. Also, I hate house sparrows.

We went to IDADA's First Friday gallery open house in Indianapolis, and everything didn't suck for once. Especially parts of the Walker Community and the Murphy Building. Big Car had an especially strong show. There were many new galleries and studios around. I feel encouraged instead of deflated and cynical the way I did after the Stutz Building show a couple of weeks ago.
